Copper Foil: The Lifeline of PCBs

Published: November 10, 2023 · Updated: November 10, 2023

Printed circuit boards (PCBs) are core components of modern electronic devices, and copper foil, as the conductive material in PCBs, plays a crucial role throughout the manufacturing process. This article will take an in-depth look at the properties and applications of copper foil, as well as its importance in the electronics industry.

Copper Foil: The Lifeline of PCBs

Copper Foil: The Lifeline of PCBs

1. What is copper foil?

Copper foil is a thin, continuous metal foil composed primarily of copper, typically containing 90% or 88% copper. It is formed into thin sheets and then bonded to the substrate of a PCB to serve as a conductive layer. Copper foil adheres easily to insulating layers, accepts a protective coating, and forms circuit patterns after etching.

2. Uses of Copper Foil

Copper foil has a variety of uses in PCB manufacturing:

  • Electrical Conductivity: Copper foil is an excellent conductive material used to conduct electricity.
  • Circuit Formation: During the etching process, portions of the copper foil are left intact, forming the circuit pattern.
  • Electromagnetic Shielding: Copper foil can be used for electromagnetic shielding; when placed on the surface of a substrate, the conductive copper foil provides excellent electrical conductivity and effective electromagnetic shielding.

3. Copper Foil Thickness

The thickness of copper foil is typically expressed in “ounces” (oz), where 1 ounce refers to 1 ounce of copper evenly distributed over an area of 1 square foot. Common copper foil thicknesses include 35 μm, 50 μm, and 70 μm. Different applications require different thicknesses of copper foil, and selecting the appropriate thickness depends on the PCB’s intended use, as well as the magnitude of the signal voltage and current.

Applications of Copper Foil in PCBs

1. Single-sided and double-sided PCBs

Generally speaking, the copper foil thickness for single- and double-sided PCBs is approximately 35 µm (1.4 mil). Copper foil of this thickness is suitable for most consumer and telecommunications products.

2. Multilayer Board

The outer layers of multilayer PCBs are generally 35 µm (1 oz), while the inner layers are typically 17.5 µm (0.7 mil). Selecting the appropriate copper foil thickness depends on the PCB’s design and intended use. Some PCBs that need to handle high currents may use thicker copper foil, such as 70 µm or 105 µm.

3. Properties of Copper Foil

Copper foil has a number of excellent properties:

  • It has low surface oxygen content and can adhere to a variety of substrates, such as metals and insulating materials.
  • It has a wide operating temperature range and is suitable for a variety of environmental conditions.

The Future of Copper Foil

Electronic-grade copper foil is widely used in various electronic products, including communications equipment, calculators, batteries, televisions, copiers, and automotive electronic components. According to forecasts by relevant organizations, domestic demand for electronic-grade copper foil in China is expected to continue growing in the future.

However, the production of copper foil faces several challenges, including resource- and technology-related barriers. Copper foil production requires substantial copper resources, and technological barriers make it difficult for new entrants to enter the market. As a result, the copper foil market remains highly competitive and full of potential.

Copper foil is an indispensable part of PCB manufacturing; its properties and applications make it a critical material in the electronics industry. With the rapid development of the electronics and information technology industry, demand for copper foil will continue to grow, creating both more opportunities and challenges for the industry.
