DFM and DFA: What Do They Focus On, Respected?
DFM · Design for Manufacturability Review
Verify whether the bare board can be manufactured according to the specified materials, stack-up, and processes, including circuit patterns, drill holes, board edges, solder mask, and special structures.
DFA · Design for Assembly Review
Ensure that components are assembled correctly according to the specifications, including matching part numbers with package types, polarity, spacing, panel layout, and fixture conditions.
This free service focuses on the review of manufacturing and assembly documents. Verification of circuit functionality, signal integrity, thermal design, safety compliance, and product reliability is not covered by DFM/DFA findings; if specialized analysis is required, the scope must be clearly defined separately.
DFM Review: Ensuring Bare Board Designs Meet Manufacturing Requirements
Trace and Copper Spacing
Inspect line widths, spacing, and localized copper patterns in relation to copper thickness, layer, and processing requirements. Manufacturing spacing cannot substitute for the product’s electrical clearance and creepage distance design.
Drilling and Interlayer Connections
Verify that PTH/NPTH, hole diameter, hole rings, distance from the hole to the copper, and blind/buried hole layers match. Special hole structures must be compatible with the stack-up and manufacturing process.
Plate-and-Frame and Composite Plates
Verify the panel frames, slot openings, distance from the copper to the panel edge, process margins, and panel separation method. For irregularly shaped and small-sized panels, confirm these details based on positioning and machining conditions.
Materials and Layers
Verify that the material grade, board thickness, copper thickness, layer sequence, and impedance requirements are complete, and clarify the procedure for approving material substitutions.
Solder Mask and Screen Printing
Inspect the solder mask openings, the solder mask between pads, and the relationship between the screen print and the pads; confirm any special requirements for openings and via holes.
Special Process Instructions
Clearly define areas such as through-holes, copper-clad filled holes, half-holes, and edge-wrapping, as well as acceptance criteria, to avoid scheduling production based solely on vague notes.
DFA Check: Ensuring Assembly Documentation Matches the Components
BOM and Package Matching
Verify the complete part number, manufacturer, location number, quantity, and non-installed components; check the package and pad information against the device datasheet.
Coordinates and Polar Directions
Verify the units, origin, rotation angle, and orientation (top/bottom) of the placement coordinates, and confirm that Pin 1 and the polarity markings match the assembly drawing.
Clearance Between Components and Board Edges
Inspect adjacent components, tall components, and areas near the board edges, and evaluate the working space in conjunction with the placement, soldering, panel separation, and rework methods.
Pads and Soldering Conditions
Review the pad layout, thermal pads, and through-hole treatment based on the actual package design; fine-pitch devices require a process review based on specific process requirements.
Supplies and Substitutes
Identify missing part numbers, supply arrangements, and substitute parts that require confirmation. Substitute parts must be approved by the design team; they cannot be automatically substituted with parts of the same package type.
Fixtures and Test Conditions
Confirm the flexible board supports, panel alignment, programming interfaces, and testing requirements. A test accessibility review does not mean that product testing has been completed.
Prepare Materials by Review Type
- Bare Board DFM
- Gerber or ODB++ files, drill files, board layout/mechanical drawings, and layer list.
- Process Requirements

From the Issue List to the Release Version
01 · Confirm Documentation and Scope
Specify whether you are requesting DFM, DFA, or both; verify that all required documents are included; and clearly identify the structures or devices that require special attention during the review.
02 · Feedback and Suggestions
Discuss specific locations, existing designs, and manufacturing implications, and distinguish between items requiring additional information, design modifications, and optional optimizations.
03 · Confirmation and Review of Revisions
The design team should confirm the changes, update the files, and then review the key issues. Production should be based on the final version confirmed by both parties.
The time required for review depends on the completeness of the documentation, the number of layers, the number of components, and any special processes involved. We will confirm the schedule after the materials are submitted; we do not guarantee a fixed turnaround time for all projects.
Frequently Asked Questions About Free DFM/DFA
Is Gerber the only tool that can perform DFA?
Gerber files can be used for some bare board inspections, but a complete assembly review also requires the BOM, placement coordinates, and assembly drawings; component-related inspections may require data sheets.
Does passing the review guarantee that the product will function properly?
No. DFM/DFA primarily identifies manufacturing and assembly risks; it cannot replace circuit verification, final product testing, or reliability testing.
Will you make changes to my design directly?
When design changes are involved, the issue and proposed solution should first be explained; the design team should then confirm them and produce a new, controlled version. Unconfirmed proposals should not be directly regarded as production instructions.
Is it necessary to follow a uniform minimum line width or via ring rule?
A single value should not be applied across the board. Rules should be determined based on the material, copper thickness, layer count, via structure, and manufacturing capabilities; specific projects are subject to engineering review.
Do I still need to provide production documentation after the review?
You must use the final approved version. If you have modified the BOM, stack-up, board outline, or layout, please update the relevant files accordingly to avoid version inconsistencies in production documentation.
Submit your documents so that any questions can be resolved before production begins.
