PTFE High-Frequency Sheets Balancing Dielectric Properties and Processing Structure

PTFE substrates used in PCBs typically contain filler or reinforcing systems. Different structures affect electrical, dimensional, and processing performance; therefore, materials should be selected and processes verified based on the specific grade.

PTFE: Materials and Selection Guidelines

This information is based on the manufacturer’s current documentation and the versions confirmed by both parties. The model descriptions do not constitute a commitment regarding real-time inventory or direct substitution; thickness, copper foil, and supply specifications are subject to project confirmation.

Ceramic-Filled PTFE

The Rogers RO3000 series falls into this category. The electrical ratings and structures of different grades must be verified individually.

Glass-Fiber-Reinforced PTFE

The AGC TLX-8 is an example of glass-fiber-reinforced PTFE; when selecting a model, be sure to verify the thickness, copper foil, and dimensional requirements.

Ceramic and Glass Fiber Composite Reinforcement

The RF-35TC, featuring a PTFE, ceramic-filled, and glass-fiber structure, is a viable candidate that meets both RF and thermal management requirements.

When selecting a model, be sure to focus on these three points

Hole Metallization Process

Review the hole wall treatment and plating conditions in accordance with the manufacturer’s processing guidelines; do not simply copy standard FR-4 processes.

Hybrid Laminating and Bonding

Specify the bonding material, substrate thickness, and thermal process, and confirm the feasibility of combining it with other materials.

RF Structural Tolerances

Evaluate the dimensions, thickness, and material parameters of antennas or transmission lines as a whole.

From Candidate Materials to Production Materials

01 · Lock Data Version

Record the complete part number, suffix, original factory data sheet, and design objectives, and list any uncertain parameters as items to be confirmed.

02 · Review of Stacking and Processes

Based on the core board, bonding material, copper foil, circuit patterns, and via structures, confirm the available specifications and manufacturing conditions.

03 · Replace after confirmation

Any changes to materials must be compared against electrical, thermal, mechanical, and documentation requirements; once confirmed by the design team, they must be incorporated into the production documentation.

Submit this information to minimize back-and-forth during the selection process.

Common Selection Issues

Are all high-frequency boards made of PTFE?

No. There are other resin systems used in high-frequency materials, such as the hydrocarbon/ceramic material in Rogers RO4000.

Can PTFE substrate be bent repeatedly?

Bend resistance cannot be inferred from the resin name alone. The applications and validation criteria for RF laminates differ from those for flexible circuit structures.

How do you compare different PTFE grades?

Align the frequencies and test methods, then compare the electrical, thermal expansion, dimensional, copper foil, and processing requirements.
