Their primary functions include providing electrical connections, mechanical support, and thermal management. Different devices use different PCB materials, and the type and selection of PCB materials have a significant impact on the performance and reliability of electronic devices. The following are some common PCB materials:

FR-4

This is the most common PCB material, consisting primarily of glass fiber and epoxy resin. It offers good insulation properties, mechanical strength, and temperature resistance, and is widely used in the manufacture of electronic products.

Flexible Printed Circuit (FPC)

FPC is a flexible printed circuit board (PCB) that offers exceptional flexibility and corrosion resistance. It is suitable for circuit boards with complex shapes and can be bent and folded, making it ideal for electronic devices with strict space and weight constraints. It is commonly found in mobile devices such as cell phones and tablets; however, due to its low mechanical strength, it is not suitable for high-power circuits.

High-TG FR-4

High-TG FR-4 material has a higher glass transition temperature (TG) than standard FR-4 material and can withstand higher temperatures (150°C) and humidity levels. It is suitable for electronic products used in high-temperature and high-humidity environments, such as in the manufacturing of printed circuit boards and automotive electronics.

Metal Core PCB

A metal-core PCB is a type of PCB structure in which the circuit layer is directly laid on a metal substrate. These PCBs use metals such as aluminum, copper, or tungsten as their base material and offer excellent heat dissipation properties. They are suitable for high-power and high-temperature applications, such as LED lighting and power supply circuits, and are ideal for high-density layouts.

Ceramic Substrate (Ceramic PCB)

Ceramic substrates are PCBs made from ceramic materials, featuring properties such as high temperature resistance, high-frequency capability, high-speed performance, and low dielectric constant. This material is used in high-frequency and high-power applications. With extremely high dielectric constants and thermal conductivity, they are suitable for RF and microwave circuits and are widely used in high-power electronic components, microwave devices, and other fields.

Radio Frequency Board (RF PCB)

These PCBs are designed for high-frequency applications and offer excellent signal transmission performance, making them suitable for applications such as 5G base stations and satellite communications. They feature low loss, low dielectric constant, and low dielectric loss factor.

CEM-3

CEM-3 is a commonly used PCB material suitable for single-sided, double-sided, and multilayer circuit boards. It is typically used in the manufacture of mid- to high-end electronic products, such as communications equipment, computers, automotive electronics, and medical devices. Compared to other PCB materials, CEM-3 offers high-temperature performance, thermal stability, mechanical strength, and low cost. However, CEM-3 also has some drawbacks. For example, its relatively high dielectric constant results in slower signal transmission speeds; chemically, it is susceptible to corrosion and dissolution. CEM-3 is a cost-effective PCB material suitable for many electronic devices that do not require exceptionally high performance.

Polyimide (PI)

Polyimide (PI) is a high-performance polymer material that exhibits excellent mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties under extreme conditions such as high temperatures, high frequencies, and high speeds. As a result, PI materials are widely used in high-reliability circuit boards in fields such as semiconductors, electronics, and aerospace. Polyimide offers high-temperature performance, capable of operating at temperatures as high as 400°C, and can withstand high thermal stress and extreme temperature fluctuations. It also features a low dielectric constant and low dielectric loss, enabling faster signal transmission and better signal integrity. It also offers good signal transmission and noise suppression capabilities in high-frequency circuits. It holds broad application prospects in high-speed, high-frequency, and high-reliability circuit board applications.

Aluminum-based PCB

Aluminum-based PCBs are printed circuit boards manufactured using an aluminum substrate as the base material. Compared to traditional glass-fiber substrates, aluminum substrates offer advantages such as excellent thermal conductivity, a low coefficient of linear expansion, and high reliability; as a result, they are widely used in fields such as LED lighting, automotive electronics, aerospace, telecommunications, and power supplies.

Rogers

A Rogers PCB refers to a printed circuit board (PCB) manufactured using Rogers material. Rogers material is a high-performance, high-frequency PCB material developed by Rogers Corporation in the United States. This material features a low dielectric constant, low loss, high stability, and high temperature resistance, making it suitable for circuit designs in high-frequency, high-speed, and microwave bands. Rogers PCBs are widely used in fields such as wireless communications, radar systems, satellite communications, aerospace, medical devices, computer hardware, and other high-performance electronic equipment. Not only do they meet the requirements of high-performance circuits, but they also enhance circuit reliability and stability, thereby improving the performance and service life of the equipment.

PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene or Teflon)

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is a high-performance material characterized by high-temperature stability, low dielectric constant, and low loss; as such, it is ideally suited for the manufacture of high-frequency and microwave circuits.
It is widely used in fields such as wireless communications, radar systems, satellite communications, aerospace, medical devices, computer hardware, and other high-performance electronic equipment. Due to PTFE’s low dielectric constant and low loss characteristics, it enables higher signal transmission speeds, lower signal loss, and better signal integrity.

The number of layers in a PCB affects the circuit layout and performance. The more layers there are, the more flexible the circuit layout becomes, and the better the circuit performance. However, as the number of layers increases, so does the cost. The choice of PCB material should be based on a comprehensive evaluation of factors such as the specific application, performance requirements, and manufacturing costs.

What are the 11 most common types of PCB materials?
