Jingpeng Electronics—a circuit board manufacturer, PCB designer, and PCBA contractor—will provide a detailed explanation.

What is FPC?

First, let's take a look at what FPC is.

FPC stands for flexible printed circuit board. It is a type of circuit board made from flexible insulating materials and is more flexible than rigid circuit boards.

FPCs typically use polyimide or polyester film as insulating materials, which offer excellent electrical properties.

This makes FPCs ideal for electronic devices that require miniaturization and high-density mounting.

Features of FPC

FPC has the following characteristics:

Flexibility: FPCs can be freely bent, coiled, and folded without damaging the circuits.

Miniaturization: FPCs can significantly reduce the size of electronic products.

High Reliability: FPCs can meet the design requirements for high-reliability electronic products.

FPC Fault Detection

1. Using an Oscilloscope and a Frequency Counter

Typically, to diagnose an FPC fault, you need to use an oscilloscope (with the crystal oscillator powered on) or a frequency meter.

We do not recommend using a multimeter for this measurement, as this would likely only involve the substitution method.

This method can detect common faults in crystal oscillators, such as internal leakage, internal open circuits, frequency drift, and leakage in externally connected capacitors. Leakage can be measured using a VI curve test.

2. Full-board testing

When testing an entire board, there are two methods for identifying FPC faults.

First, if a failure is detected in any of the chips surrounding the crystal oscillator during testing, this may be one of the causes of the malfunction.

Second, if no other faults are found besides the crystal oscillator, you may also want to consider the possibility of a fault in the FPC.

3. Functional and Parametric Testing

is used to test devices; it can only indicate the cutoff, amplification, and saturation regions, but cannot measure specific values such as operating frequency and speed.

For TTL digital chips, it is only possible to determine changes in the high and low output levels; it is not possible to detect the speed of the rising and falling edges.

4. Reset Circuit

If there are large-area integrated circuits on the FPC, special attention must be paid to the reset function. Before testing, it is best to replace the device, power it on and off repeatedly, and press the reset button several times to ensure that everything is working properly.

5. Chips with programs

With EPROM chips, the program is generally not damaged, because these chips require ultraviolet light to erase the program.

However, it is important to note that even if the program is not used for a long time, it may still become corrupted due to the materials used in its creation; therefore, it is best to make a backup.

For EEPROMs, SPROMs, and other devices, as well as battery-backed RAM chips, the program can be easily corrupted.

It has not yet been determined whether these chips are damaged after scanning their VI curves using . Therefore, please handle these chips with extreme care.

Flexible printed circuit boards (FPCs) are a key component in the manufacturing of modern electronic devices, offering exceptional flexibility and performance. However, due to their unique properties, FPCs are prone to failure.

How do you diagnose FPC faults?
