Flexible printed circuit boards, commonly referred to as FPCs, are highly reliable, bendable printed circuit boards made from polyimide or polyester film as the substrate.<\/p>\n

It is widely used in a variety of products, including cell phones, laptops, PDAs, digital cameras, and LCMs.<\/p>\n

In this article, we will introduce common terms related to FPC.<\/p>\n

\"FPC<\/p>\n

1. Access Hole<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Exposure holes, also known as through-holes or bottom-exposed holes, refer to holes in the outer protective layer of a flexible circuit board that are used to bond the protective layer to the surface of the circuit board to prevent soldering. These holes must be designed to expose the solder rings or pads required for soldering so that components can be soldered in place.<\/p>\n

2. Acrylic<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Acrylic is the common name for polyacrylic resin; in many FPCs, it is used as a film for the manufacture of laminates.<\/p>\n

3. Adhesives<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Adhesives are substances used to bond two surfaces together; they are typically resins, coatings, or similar materials.<\/p>\n

4. Anchoring Spurs<\/strong><\/h2>\n

An adhesive tab is an additional tab attached to a medium-gauge or single-gauge sheet to enhance the adhesion of the hole ring weld pad to the sheet surface, thereby reducing the likelihood of it detaching from the sheet.<\/p>\n

5. Flexibility, Bendability (Bandability)<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Flexibility is a characteristic of dynamic flexible circuits, such as those connected to the print heads in computer disk drives. These circuits must undergo one billion flex cycles to ensure their quality.<\/p>\n

6. Bonding Layer<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The bonding layer typically refers to the film layer in multilayer printed circuit boards, TAB tape, or flexible circuit boards, which includes the adhesive layer between the copper foil and the polyimide (PI) substrate.<\/p>\n

7. Coverlay or Cover Coat<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The outer layer of a flexible circuit board consists of the outer circuit traces, which are typically covered with a soft acrylic layer. This layer not only serves as a solder mask but also protects the outer circuit traces, enhancing the flexibility and durability of the board.<\/p>\n

8. Dynamic Flex FPC<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Flexible printed circuits are flexible circuit boards used in applications involving continuous motion, such as the flexible circuits used in the read\/write heads of computer disk drives. These boards must meet extremely high requirements for flexural performance.<\/p>\n

9. Laminating Film or Adhesive Film (Film Adhesive)<\/strong><\/h2>\n

An adhesive film is a dry, thin-film adhesive layer that may consist of a film reinforced with fiber fabric or simply a thin layer of adhesive material. In FPCs, the adhesive film is a very important layer.<\/p>\n

10. Flexible Printed Circuit (FPC)<\/strong><\/h2>\n

A flexible circuit board is a special type of printed circuit board that allows for three-dimensional shaping during downstream assembly. Its substrate is typically polyimide (PI) or polyester film, and it can be manufactured for through-hole or surface-mount assembly. It can also be equipped with a coverlay or solder mask.<\/p>\n

11. Flexural Failure<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Flexural damage refers to the fracture or damage of a material (sheet) caused by repeated bending motions; it typically occurs during the use of flexible sheets.<\/p>\n

12. Polyimide Flexible Material (Kapton)<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Kapton is a trademark of DuPont; it is a polyimide film commonly used as a substrate for flexible printed circuits (FPCs). After laminating with rolled or electroplated copper foil, it can be processed into FPCs.<\/p>\n

13. Membrane Switch<\/strong><\/h2>\n

A membrane switch is a type of switch that uses a transparent polyester film as a substrate. It is manufactured by printing silver paste circuits onto the film and bonding it to a raised panel or circuit board to create touch-sensitive switches or keyboards. These switches are commonly used in devices such as handheld calculators, electronic dictionaries, and remote controls for home appliances.<\/p>\n

14. Polyester Films<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Polyester films, commonly referred to as PET films, are most commonly represented by DuPont\u2019s Mylar Films. They are an electrical insulating material used in flexible circuit boards, cables, transformers, and other applications in the electronics industry.<\/p>\n

15. Polyimide (PI)<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Polyimide is a resin formed by the polymerization of bismaleimide and aromatic diamine, and it offers excellent heat resistance and electrical properties. It is commonly used in applications such as FPCs and TABs.<\/p>\n
