Below are 10 efficient PCB panelization techniques to help you become a better PCB designer:

PCB Panelization Techniques

The outer frame (clamping edge) of the PCB panel should feature a closed-loop design to ensure that the panel does not deform once it is secured in the fixture. The width of the panel’s outer frame should comply with factory specifications to meet the requirements of the production line.

There are generally restrictions on the width of PCB panelized boards, typically ≤260 mm (SIEMENS line) or ≤300 mm (FUJI line). If automatic dispensing is required, the width and length of the panelized board must also meet specific requirements.

The outer dimensions of PCB panelizations should be as close to a square as possible. We recommend using 2×2, 3×3, … panelizations, but avoid creating mixed-orientation panels.

The center-to-center distance between small panels should be maintained between 75 mm and 145 mm to ensure appropriate spacing between panels and facilitate manufacturing.

When setting reference positioning marks, a solder mask-free area 1.5 mm larger than the mark is typically left around it to ensure accurate positioning and effective optical recognition.

There should be no large components or protruding components near the connection points between the outer frame of the panel and the smaller internal panels, and a clearance of more than 0.5 mm should be maintained between the components and the edge of the PCB to ensure proper operation of the cutting tool.

Four定位 holes are typically drilled at the four corners of the outer frame of a PCB panel, with a diameter of 4 mm ± 0.01 mm. The hole walls must be smooth and free of burrs, and the holes must have adequate strength to prevent breakage during the production process.

Each sub-board within a PCB panel must have at least three positioning holes with diameters ranging from 3 mm to 6 mm; no traces or surface-mount components are allowed within 1 mm of the edge positioning holes.

Reference marks used on PCBs for board-level alignment and the alignment of fine-pitch components should, in principle, be placed at the diagonal corners of QFPs with a pitch of less than 0.65 mm. Reference marks used for aligning sub-boards in panelized PCBs should be used in pairs and placed at the diagonal corners of the alignment features.

For large components, such as I/O ports, microphones, battery connectors, microswitches, headphone jacks, and motors, positioning pins or holes should be provided to ensure accurate installation.

Why Do We Need Imposition Design?

On an SMT assembly line, there are indeed specific size specifications and tooling requirements. If the size of a single circuit board is smaller than the factory’s minimum size requirement, a panelization design is needed to combine multiple circuit boards into a single panel.

As you mentioned, the benefits of panel design are primarily as follows:

Improved Efficiency: Through panelization design, multiple circuit boards can be processed simultaneously in a single machining operation, thereby significantly improving production efficiency.

Cost Savings: Panel layout design allows for full utilization of the production line’s capacity, reduces waste, and lowers production costs.

Simplified Assembly: Circuit boards that have been assembled into panels are easier to secure and align during the assembly process, which facilitates the smooth progression of subsequent production steps.

What is a "mark" point?

“A ”mark,” also known as a ”定位点,” is a special mark or reference point on a PCB (Printed Circuit Board). It serves as a reference point for positioning and alignment on the circuit board, helping to determine the board’s exact location and orientation.

During the manufacturing and assembly of PCBs, mark points are very important because they serve the following purposes:

Positioning and Alignment: During the PCB manufacturing process, registration marks are used to align the different layers of the PCB, ensuring that the patterns, hole locations, and component placements on each layer are accurate.

Precise Soldering: During the assembly of a circuit board, reference marks help SMT placement machines or wave soldering equipment accurately position components, ensuring precise soldering and preventing misalignment or displacement.

Troubleshooting and Repair: During the troubleshooting and repair of circuit boards, mark points can serve as reference points, helping engineers accurately pinpoint the source of the problem and improve the efficiency of troubleshooting and repair.

Typically, mark points are special patterns or hole locations added by the manufacturer to the PCB design files and marked on the PCB during the actual manufacturing process using specialized equipment or processes. These marks can be circular, square, cross-shaped, or other shapes; their specific form and location are usually determined by the manufacturer and design requirements.

A skilled PCB designer must take manufacturing factors into account when designing panel layouts to ensure ease of fabrication, improve production efficiency, and reduce production costs. Understanding these little-known secrets of PCB panelization will help you take your PCB design skills to the next level.

What are some techniques for PCB panelization?
