To prevent short circuits from affecting efficiency, it is necessary to inspect the circuit boards and address any issues promptly. So, how do you check for short circuits on a PCB? Let’s take a look at the following information.

1. First, identify the category: At which layer did the short circuit actually occur?

Categorizing the issues before troubleshooting can save you half the time. PCB short circuits are divided into four categories based on their causes, and the methods for locating them are completely different:

Type

Typical Symptoms

High-Risk Areas

Can it be repaired?

Design-Induced Short Circuit

Short circuits between different potentials within the same network; reversed packaging orientation

Schematic/Package Library

Revised version; cannot be edited on-site

Artificial Short Circuit

Etching residue, copper plating nodules, interlayer dielectric breakdown

Circuit Transfer, Electroplating, Laminating

Some can be repaired; most are scrapped.

Assembly-Related Short Circuit

Solder bridges, solder balls, misplaced components, reversed polarity

Solder Paste Printing, Placement, and Reflow

Most are repairable

Operational Short Circuit

CAF growth, dendrites, foreign matter, moisture absorption

Long-term service

Usually cannot be repaired

A short circuit encountered on site,About 70 percent are assembly-type... 20 percent is due to manufacturing issues, and the remainder is attributable to design and usability. Therefore, the troubleshooting sequence should be: first, perform a visual inspection and AOI scan to identify solder bridges and solder balls → then use electrical testing to pinpoint the location → and only then should internal board defects be suspected.

2. Methods for Checking PCB Short Circuits:

2.1 Using a Short-Circuit Location Analyzer

A short-circuit location analyzer is a highly effective tool for pinpointing the location of short circuits on a PCB. By carefully scanning the circuit board, it can quickly identify potential short-circuit issues.

2.2 Open the PCB design and draw the layout on the computer

By opening the PCB design file and performing graphical analysis on your computer, you can more easily identify potential short circuits. Check the circuit network, paying particular attention to internal short circuits in ICs.

2.3 Gradually Disconnect the Circuit

If a short circuit is detected, you can use the method of progressively disconnecting the circuit to identify the problem. Using a circuit board—especially a single-layer or double-layer board—progressively disconnect the circuit and then power it on section by section to gradually eliminate the short circuit.

2.4 For BGA chips, use ferrite beads or 0-ohm resistors

For BGA chips, since all solder joints are covered by the chip, they may not be directly visible. For multilayer boards (4 layers or more), it is recommended to use ferrite beads or 0-ohm resistors. During the design phase, separate the power supplies for each chip; this way, if a short circuit occurs between the power supply and ground, the ferrite bead will interrupt the circuit, making it easier to locate the problem.

2.5 Exercise caution when soldering small surface-mount capacitors

Pay special attention to small surface-mount capacitors, particularly power supply filter capacitors (103 or 104), as they are numerous and can easily cause a short circuit between the power supply and ground. It is best to test these capacitors before soldering to ensure they are in good working order.

2.6 Developing Good Welding Habits

When soldering by hand, it’s very important to develop good habits. Before soldering, visually inspect the PCB and use a multimeter to check critical circuits—especially the power supply and ground—for short circuits. After soldering each chip, test it with a multimeter to ensure the circuit is functioning properly. Additionally, be careful not to toss your soldering iron carelessly to prevent accidental damage.

3. The Limits of Six Positioning Methods

Each of the six methods listed above has its own limitations, and choosing the wrong one will be a waste of time:

Means

Can be located

Applicable Board Types

Time taken

Limitations

Short-Circuit Location Analyzer

Specific coordinates (to the nearest centimeter)

Any

a few minutes

The equipment is expensive and rarely found in small factories.

Design Document Review

Network/Packet Level

Any

10–30 minutes

Look only for design errors

Gradually cut the power supply

Regional-level

Single-layer/Double-layer Board

30 minutes–several hours

Destructive; not suitable for multilayer boards

Ferrite Beads/0Ω Zone

Power Domain Level

Multilayer boards with 4 or more layers

Embedded during the design phase

This requires advance planning; it cannot be made up for later.

Measure the capacitors one by one

Component-level

Any

10–20 minutes

Cover only the power decoupling capacitors

Multimeter Range Selection

Network-level

Any

5–30 minutes

Insufficient resolution for low-resistance short circuits (<1 Ω)

4. Advanced Techniques: How to Troubleshoot Low-Resistance Short Circuits

When the short-circuit resistance is only a few tens of milliohms, the multimeter’s buzzer function becomes completely ineffective—it cannot distinguish between 0.05 Ω and 0.5 Ω. In this case, three advanced methods are required:

Milliohm Meter / Microohmmeter—Four-Wire Method: Using a four-wire Kelvin measurement to eliminate the resistance of the test leads allows for resolution down to the 1 mΩ range. Measure in sections along the short-circuit network; the section with the lowest resistance is the one closest to the fault point.

Constant Current Source + Voltage Drop Scan: Apply a constant current of 1–3 A to the short-circuited network (with the voltage limited to within 0.5 V to prevent device damage), and scan along the traces with a millivoltmeter; the point where the voltage gradient changes abruptly is the fault location. This is the most practical method for locating short circuits in inner layers.

Thermal Imaging: When applying a constant current, use an infrared thermal imager to observe hot spots. Solder bridges, copper nodules, and CAF channels will all heat up due to current concentration, and bright spots will become visible within a few seconds. Be careful not to set the current too high, as this could burn out the channel.

Two other low-cost techniques are very useful for small-scale repairs:Rosin Fumigation Method(After applying rosin, apply an electric current; the short-circuit point melts first and emits smoke) andFreeze-Spray Method(After spraying the refrigerant, apply power; the frost at the short-circuit point will melt first.) Both methods rely on localized heat generation at the short-circuit point and are ineffective against high-resistance short circuits.

If it is a BGA or an internal short circuit, neither visual inspection nor electrical testing will be effective; it is necessary toX-ray InspectionOr cross-section analysis. X-rays can directly reveal solder bridges and voids beneath the BGA, while cross-sections are used to identify defects in the interlayer dielectric.

5. The Application of SMT Placement Machines in Contract Manufacturing

Surface-mount technology (SMT) is an indispensable part of electronic product manufacturing. Typically, solder paste printing and reflow soldering can complete the printing and soldering of an entire PCB in a single pass, whereas SMT components must be placed one by one. In this context, the performance of the SMT placement machine is critical to production efficiency and quality.

SMT placement machines are the core equipment in SMT product assembly lines and determine the level of automation in electronic product assembly technology. The sophistication of these machines directly affects placement accuracy and efficiency.

6. What is surface-mount assembly? How does a surface-mount placement machine work?

SMT assembly involves removing surface-mount components (such as SMDs) from their packages and placing them onto designated pad locations on a PCB. This process is commonly referred to as “picking and placing.” Before placement, the pad locations are usually either coated with solder paste or adhesive.

The basic workflow of a surface-mount placement machine is as follows:

The PCB is fed to the SMT machine's workstation, where it is optically aligned and secured.

The feeder delivers the components to be installed to the pick-up station of the placement machine, which uses an appropriate nozzle to pick up the components from their packages.

When the placement head delivers components to the PCB, the placement machine’s automatic optical inspection system inspects the components and performs alignment correction.

Once the placement head reaches the designated position, it controls the nozzle to accurately place the component on the specified pad on the PCB using appropriate pressure, and bonds the component using pre-applied solder paste or surface-mount adhesive.

Repeat the above steps until all components to be installed have been placed. The PCB is then removed from the placement machine and prepared for the next step.

The use of SMT placement machines enables efficient and precise component placement, thereby improving production efficiency and product quality.

To assess whether a SMT placement machine is suitable for fine-pitch products, simply consider these four metrics:

Placement Accuracy: Repeatability, typically ranging from ±50 μm (chip components) to ±25 μm (fine-pitch ICs).

Placement Speed: CPH (components per hour) must be adjusted based on the actual component configuration; the manufacturer's rated value is typically based on optimal conditions.

Range of Components That Can Be Processed: Minimum 0201/01005; maximum: irregularly shaped parts and long connectors.

Visual Alignment Skills: Does it support bottom-side inspection, BGA ball-to-ball alignment, and bad board marking recognition (Bad Mark)?

7. The Six Most Common Causes of Short Circuits

According to on-site statistics, the sources of short circuits during the assembly phase are highly concentrated in six areas:

Excess Solder Paste or Sagging During Solder Paste Printing: Excessively large openings in the steel mesh, improper solder paste viscosity, and excessive dwell time after printing—which cause edge collapse—are the primary causes of solder bridges.

Fine-Pitch Component Bridging: QFN/QFP packages with a pitch of 0.4 mm or less, as well as 0201 components, are extremely sensitive to solder paste volume and placement accuracy.

Wrong components or reversed polarity: If diodes, LEDs, or tantalum capacitors are connected in reverse, they will directly create a low-resistance path between the power supply and ground.

Solder Ball Residue: If the solder beads splashed during the reflow process are not cleaned away, they will roll around during subsequent vibration and cause random short circuits.

PCB Pad Design Defects: Insufficient pad spacing, missing solder mask bridges, and improper solder pad connections.

Poor Manual Soldering: Excessive soldering iron temperature causes the pad to be removed; conductive flux residue; improper control of solder volume.

8. Prevention: Checklists for Design and Manufacturing

The key to addressing short circuits lies in prevention. Here are seven steps you can take during the design phase:

Power Domain Partitioning: The power supply for each major chip is routed independently via a ferrite bead or a 0Ω resistor; in the event of a short circuit, simply disconnecting it allows you to pinpoint the affected area. This is the most valuable tip, and it costs almost nothing.

Package Library Review: The packaging of new devices must undergo a first-article inspection; the marking on pin 1 must match the silkscreen.

Solder Mask Bridge Inspection: Solder mask bridges must be maintained between closely spaced pads; when the spacing is less than 0.2 mm, the solder mask process capability must be evaluated.

DFM Spacing Verification: Process allowances must be provided for line spacing, pad spacing, and hole-to-wall spacing; do not design right at the lower limit of capability.

Reserved Test Points: Test points should be left on each power network and critical signal line so that flying probes and ICT can make contact.
