These various process steps can leave different types of residues on the PCB, particularly in the soldered areas.

In humid environments and under certain voltages, these residues may undergo electrochemical reactions with conductive materials, causing a decrease in surface insulation resistance (SIR) and, in turn, triggering a series of problems.

Potential Risks

If electromigration and dendritic crystal growth occur on a circuit board, they may cause short circuits between conductors, commonly known as “leakage.” This situation can seriously affect the performance and reliability of electronic products and may even lead to product failure.

Measures to Ensure Electrical Reliability

To ensure the electrical reliability of electronic products, it is necessary to evaluate the performance of different no-clean fluxes. On the same circuit board, use the same type of flux whenever possible or perform post-soldering cleaning to minimize compatibility issues that may arise from using different fluxes.

Reliability Analysis

Analyzing the reliability of solder joints provides a better understanding of potential risks. The following are the dimensions for analyzing solder joint reliability:

Mechanical Strength of Welds: Check whether the solder joints are strong enough to withstand mechanical stress.

Solder Whiskers, Voids, and Cracks: Check the solder joints for issues such as tin whiskers, voids, or cracks.

Cytotoxicity of Intermetallic Compounds: Check whether the intermetallic compounds have formed properly to ensure the reliability of the joint.

Mechanical Vibration Failure: To determine whether the solder joints will fail under mechanical vibration.

Thermal Cycling Failure: Analyze whether the solder joints can remain stable during temperature cycling.

Electrical Reliability: Consider whether the solder joints meet the electrical performance requirements.

The Challenge of Hidden Defects

Some defects are hidden and cannot be detected by the naked eye. These include the microstructure of solder joints, internal stresses, internal voids, and cracks—particularly the thickness of intermetallic compounds. Even manual or automated inspections during the SMT process have difficulty detecting these hidden defects.

Therefore, various reliability tests and analyses must be conducted, such as temperature cycling, vibration testing, drop testing, high-temperature storage testing, humidity and heat testing, electromigration (ECM) testing, accelerated life testing, and accelerated stress screening.

Finally, electrical and mechanical performance tests must be conducted to ensure the reliability of the solder joints.

The long-term reliability of electronic products is closely related to soldering quality, especially in lead-free soldering. To ensure the electrical reliability of a product, it is necessary to comprehensively consider multiple factors, including design, materials, processes, and management.

Therefore, starting from the design phase of lead-free PCBA products, we must consider the compatibility of lead-free materials with each other, as well as the compatibility of lead-free materials with the design and manufacturing processes, and take appropriate measures to mitigate potential risks.

How Can PCBA Ensure Electrical Reliability?
