Applications such as telemedicine, high-definition virtual reality games, autonomous driving, and smart cities will become more convenient and be implemented more seamlessly.

Alternative Materials for 5G High-Frequency Boards

To support the millimeter-wave range of 5G, it is essential to reduce the dielectric loss of insulating materials. Dielectric loss refers to the loss of energy in a dielectric material that is converted into heat under an alternating electric field, thereby affecting signal quality. In the millimeter-wave frequency band, the degradation in signal quality caused by dielectric loss is particularly severe, making the selection of appropriate printed circuit board (PCB) insulation materials critical.

Fluorocarbon resins are a typical type of low-transmission-loss resin, with Teflon and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) being representative examples. Although they offer excellent heat resistance, moisture resistance, and chemical resistance, they are relatively hard and have poor processability. Liquid crystal polymers (LCPs) are another type of material with low transmission loss, but their high thermoplasticity can lead to defects during the manufacturing of high-frequency printed circuit boards.

Currently, many companies are developing low-transmission-loss resin materials suitable for millimeter-wave applications. For example, Panasonic’s MEGTRON6 offers better processability than Teflon during the substrate manufacturing process and is used as a substrate for CCL (copper-clad laminate).

Differences Between High-Frequency (High-Frequency PCBs) and 5G and Millimeter Wave

Both the frequency bands used for 5G communications and the millimeter-wave bands fall within the high-frequency range. 5G communication bands are divided into Sub-6 and millimeter wave. Sub-6 refers to bands below 6 GHz, which can be implemented using the same communication technologies as 4G (LTE, Wi-Fi). However, in the Sub-6 band, improvements in ultra-high-speed, high-capacity communication are not significant.

The characteristics of ultra-high-speed and high-capacity communications are primarily found in the millimeter-wave band. Generally speaking, millimeter-wave frequencies exceed 30 GHz, and since the 28 GHz frequency used in 5G communications is close to the millimeter-wave range, it is commonly referred to as millimeter-wave.

What are the (high-frequency PCBs) used in 5G communications?

(High-Frequency PCBs) Printed circuit boards used in 5G communications have a wide range of applications, including:

Base Station: A key component of base stations used to transmit and receive 5G radio waves.

5G Smartphones: Used to install 5G communication modules to enable high-speed connectivity.

Monitoring Sensors: Monitoring sensors for various applications, such as environmental monitoring in smart cities.

Autonomous Driving Radar: Used in autonomous driving systems to enable precise perception and decision-making.

These boards typically feature multiple layers of insulation and patterned layers to support high-frequency transmission and communication. The specifications for high-frequency PCBs vary depending on the application.

As of 2023, the application areas for high-frequency PCBs are still being explored, and in some respects, the direction has yet to be determined. However, with the global rollout of 5G communications, many related products are expected to accelerate their commercialization. As base station infrastructure improves, various devices will be equipped with 5G communication modules, bringing greater convenience to our lives.

Understanding 5G High-Frequency Boards, Millimeter Wave, and Their Impact on the Communications Industry
What is the relationship between 5G high-frequency circuit boards and millimeter-wave technology?
