A multilayer circuit board consists of several etched single-sided or double-sided boards laminated together. Compared to single-layer and double-layer circuit boards, multilayer circuit boards offer many advantages in compact electronic devices. The following are the advantages of multilayer circuit boards:

High assembly density and compact size: As electronic devices become smaller, higher demands are placed on the electrical performance of PCBs, leading to increased demand for multilayer circuit boards. Multilayer circuit boards can accommodate more components within the same footprint.

Easy wiring: Multilayer printed circuit boards can shorten wiring lengths, reduce the connection lengths between electronic components, and increase signal transmission speeds.

Optimizing High-Frequency Circuits: After adding a ground plane, the signal lines will present a constant low impedance to ground, reducing circuit impedance and improving shielding effectiveness, making it particularly suitable for high-frequency circuits.

Heat Dissipation and Shielding Functions: For products that require high thermal dissipation performance, multilayer printed circuit boards can incorporate a metal core heat dissipation layer to meet both shielding and thermal dissipation requirements.

Although multilayer printed circuit boards outperform single-layer and double-layer boards in terms of performance, manufacturing costs, processing time, and the difficulty of quality inspection all increase as the number of layers increases. However, when comparing costs for boards of the same area, although multilayer PCBs are more expensive, the cost difference is not significant due to factors such as noise reduction. With technological advancements, modern PCBs have evolved to feature more than 100 layers and are widely used in aerospace instruments and medical devices.

In situations requiring a large number of interconnections and crossings, achieving satisfactory performance necessitates the use of more than two layers, which led to the concept of multilayer printed circuit boards. The original purpose of manufacturing multilayer printed circuit boards was to provide greater routing flexibility for complex and/or noise-sensitive electronic circuits. Among multilayer circuit boards, four-layer and six-layer boards are relatively common and are frequently encountered in our daily lives. The main difference between four-layer and six-layer boards lies in the number of internal signal layers, as well as the configuration of the ground and power planes.

Main Applications of Multilayer Printed Circuit Boards

Multilayer printed circuit boards are primarily used in professional electronic equipment, especially in applications with strict weight and size requirements. However, increasing the number of layers to gain more space and reduce weight also increases manufacturing costs. In high-speed circuits, multilayer printed circuit boards provide PCB designers with more routing layers, as well as larger ground and power planes.

Overall, multilayer printed circuit boards are widely used in the manufacturing of electronic products due to their design flexibility, cost-effectiveness, and stable and reliable electrical performance.

What are the advantages and applications of multilayer printed circuit boards?
